Cho Oyu from the Tibet side. Photo by Rick Wilcox. Click for larger image.Cho Oyu is a boundary peak between Tibet to the north and Nepal to the south. Originally measured at 8,153 meters it was the seventh highest peak in the world. With more modern and accurate measuring devices the elevation comes in at 8,201 meters and is officially the sixth highest peak in the world, passing Dhaulagiri at 8,167 meters.

First climbed in 1954, Cho Oyu was the fifth 8,000 meter peak ever to be climbed. A small Austrian team, under the leadership of Harold Trichy made the first ascent on October 19th. Tichy, with s. Jochler and Pasang Dawa Lama climbed the now standard route from the north, the West Ridge to the West Face.
Cho Oyu is a special peak for me. In 1985 Mark Richey and I spent three months on the South Face with a Polish team of ten climbers. After ascending the south Face to the East Ridge, Mark and I eventually failed only 300 meters from the top of the main peak. We were able to ascend the neighboring peak, Ngozumpa Kang I at 7,940 meters. It turned out that ours was the third ascent of the peak and the first American ascent. being so close to the top of Cho Oyu, I determined that if I ever had the chance I would return by the more moderate northern route and once again aspire to stand on the true summit. Another lesson I have learned in the mountains is not to wait too long to try to climb these monster mountains (age sneaks up on us!).
Cho Oyu by the northern normal route in Tibet is considered one of the more modest 8,000 meter peaks. Remember that there are no easy 8,000 meter peaks by any route. Reinhold Messner too sixteen years and forty-six expeditions to become the first person to climb all of the fourteen 8,000 meter peaks. he climbed Cho Oyu by a western variation of the route, which we will attempt. Messner said, "Even when you are not looking for danger (on 8,000 meter peaks) danger will find you." The struggle to climb an 8,000 meter peak will turn into a struggle with yourself. It will be the most difficult and sustained physical and mental challenge of your life.
The views of Mt. Everest and the Khumbu region from Cho Oyu are spectacular. The West Ridge is not considered to be very technical but it is a long route on a very big mountain so only experienced mountaineers with high altitude experience will become members of the eight to ten-man climbing team. The expedition will be lead by Rick Wilcox as he returns for his 20th Himalayan adventure.
After reading all of this and you're still interested in becoming a member of our 2006 climbing team please contact Rick Wilcox at (603) 356-6316.
