This course is for skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and climbers who venture into avalanche terrain (which includes the White Mountains!). Avalanches are serious business as evidenced by the number of injuries and deaths suffered by climbers, hikers and skiers in the White Mountains through the years. A blend of snow science knowledge and practical experience in the field is required to teach these courses.

You will learn to identify hazards and evaluate the stability of the snowpack. "Classroom" oriented material will include snowpack history, snow mechanics, route finding and rescue strategies. Fieldwork will consist of snow pits, weak layer identification and backcountry rescue with a variety of transceivers. With this course you should be able to estimate the avalanche hazard level (low, moderate, considerable, high and extreme) so you can travel more safely in the backcountry.
We also take reservations for our Level I and Level II Avalanche Awareness & Rescue courses for private groups with five or more members.

Avalanche in the Annapurna Sanctuary, Nepal (click for full size image)IMCS guides responsible for teaching our Avalanche courses are Eric Siefer and Kyle Tyler. Eric Siefer has been guiding for 11 years (6years with IMCS) throughout the U.S and abroad. He combines his thorough knowledge of climbing, skiing and guiding with his several years of teaching avalanche courses to provide practical insight for students looking to improve there decison making and hazard evaluation skills in the mountains. Eric has completed training for level I and II avalanche courses and training as a course leader for the American Institute for Research and Education (AIARE).

Kyle Tyler runs a program called Know Snow and is a professional Member of the American Avalanche Association. He has taught many Level I and Level II courses throughout New England. Kyle knows snow science and is able to share this with students in a practical manner. Kyle likes to teach much of the "classroom" material outdoors so come prepared to deal with the weather and investigate the snowpack.
IMCS and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides avalanche expert Doug Workman teaching a private Level I (Avalanche Awareness) course to students from Colby College during the frigid winter of 2003. Photo by IMCS guide Eric SieferWe can also make arrangements for private group courses for up to eight or more students. If you have a group of friends or climbing partners that want top get together and take your own course just give us a call and let us know what dates work best for you. Since our classes are small, Kyle and Eric can personalize each course while following an established curriculum. Students get plenty of time to ask questions and receive thoughtful answers. The following is just one example of the feedback we received during the 2003 season.
"I took the Avalanche Awareness class this past weekend with guide
Doug Workman and wanted to comment on what an excellent teacher he was. He was energetic, friendly and had a good mastery of the subject. I will definitely be continuing my education in avalanche awareness with IMCS". Ty C.
